(This is a project collaborated with Johnson Controls Canada.)
Project Context
Johnson Controls has a long history of little to no interaction with the end user; most of their business is done with suppliers and technicians. For this reason, the products that they have created in their 130 years have been tailored for groups and bulk sale versus individuals and families. The discussions held with representatives of the company made it clear that their intention is to reverse this and transition into a stronger relationship with the individuals who actually use the products. Previous products have been clunky, difficult to integrate into a smart home, overcomplicated, and unapproachable. Customer complaints correlated with this history, Facebook feedback shows consist complaints of unexpected fees, faulty and defective items, confusing user interfaces, and a dire lack of customer service.
Intro
The essence of this project is to redesign a security system to overcome the issues found in current products. Our target audience are residential and small business owners that can use a smaller scale security system to address their varying needs as a consumer. Redesigning a smart home security system at this point in technological advancements allows a new system to be created by addressing exactly what the consumer wants based on their reviews and negative responses to already existing systems. As well as having a system that has compatibility and connectivity to other similar home systems and accessories to create a global security hub that is appealing through its flexibility to use.

Project Aim
Our central project aim is to address the company's lack of connection with the end user. Our intention is to offer a product that establishes a strong relationship not only between the user and Johnson Controls, but between the user and the very notion of what it means to be secure. Throughout the user experience of the product, the user will be the one to create a sense of security in their own home. This will be achieved through simple do-it-yourself installation, intuitive user interface design, and seamless integration (aesthetic and technological) onto the home.
